In our group, recently, we have started to investigate the response of sessile droplets of liquid crystals to external electric fields. In particular, we study the wetting properties of liquid crystals using dielectrowetting, a novel technique based on liquid dielectrophoresis. In standard configuration, dielectrowetting employs a set of coplanar strip electrodes to produce a non-uniform electric field, which allows to drive the spreading of non-conductive droplets such as most common thermotropic liquid crystals (5CB for example).
